Star Trek: Discovery Guide | What You Need to Know Before the Premiere

GUUYYYYSSS, the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery is less than ONE DAY AWAY, and I cannot contain my excitement! And while there may be tons of excitement about this new chapter in the Star Trek canon, there is still a lot of information to learn and digest before Sunday’s premiere.

Today, we’re going to have a rundown of what we know about the show, speculations, and all necessary information to prep for the Sept. 24th air date. So strap into your Captain’s chair, and set a course, because here’s what you need to know about Star Trek: Discovery!

  • What is Star Trek: Discovery?

Star Trek: Discovery is the latest series in the Star Trek universe. While it remains in the canon, this series will focus on a new group of diverse characters (see below)

  • What will the series be about?

The plot of the series will be set 10 years before The Original Series (TOS), and after Star Trek: Enterprise. While the series will host a cast of new characters and two new ship (the U.S.S. Discovery and U.S.S. Shenzhou), what makes Discovery unique is that it will focus on a crew member, not a Starfleet captain. What’s more, this particular crew member is a female character, and we haven’t seen a female main character since Voyager.

Not only will Discovery provide fans with another chapter in the overall history of Star Trek, it will also prove innovative and exciting, breathing new life into a series that’s been known for 50+ years.

Other tidbits of information include a conflict with the Klingons, and appearances by Spock’s father, Sarek.

  • Who’s who in the new Star Trek series?

On top of this exiting new plot line, Discovery will boast a cast of excellent actors to bring the story to life. The front runner of the show–that crew member I talked about earlier–will be played by The Walking Dead actress Sonequa Martin-Green.

We’ve also been introduced to two Starfleet captains: Captain Philippa Georgiou (played by Michelle Yeoh, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and Captain Gabriel Lorca (played by Jason Isaacs, the Harry Potter franchise).

We will also be seeing our favorite character actor Doug Jones (Hocus Pocus, Hellboy, Legion) as Science Officer Saru, and Sarek will be played by James Frain.

  • When/where can I watch Star Trek: Discovery?

Discovery will take off this Sunday, September 24th, at 8:30PM ET. It will be available to watch on CBS All Access, the network’s video subscription service, and Netflix (for international viewers). However, the pilot episode will air directly onto CBS, but after that, it will only be available on CBS All Access. *Cue collective booing.

However, the second episode, which is slated to air the same night, will only be available on this streaming service. The good news is, though, you can try out CBS All Access for one week for free. #SilverLining

  • Other tidbits about Discovery

There are some other exciting nuances we have not touched upon yet, which should be noted. The main one–more so because I love the Star Trek regalia–is that there are brand new uniforms. These uniforms are reminiscent of those worn on Enterprise, but they’re sleeker and modern than the TOS garb. Though there’s a contemporary twist on these uniforms, the Starfleet badges are very similar to the ones worn in TOS.

Additionally, since this show takes place prior to the 5-year mission of the NCC-1701 Enterprise, the technology should be similar. In a first-look at the props of the show, CBS revealed pieces like the hand phaser.

Also, forget everything you knew about what Klingons look like, because this show blows creature affects out of the water.

No more butt heads! The Klingon people have an upgraded style and physique to match their warrior culture.

Finally, we have a title theme for the show, thanks to composer Jeff Russo:

  1. CBS All Access bums me out every time I see it mentioned. I know it’s not a new concept and many, many services do it now, but people already pay for cable or whatever they use and then have yet another payment. The likelihood I’d watch this show now basically went to 0 because it’s behind yet another paywall.

  2. Jason Issacs!! I really enjoyed his role in the Harry Potter franchise. Also I’m digging the uniforms. I like the blue with the gold on the side. Only downside to this is I don’t have CBS All Access and wasn’t planning on getting it.

I loved the two first episodes! I need to watch the 3rd one (I had no time yet). But I’m sure it’s going to be awesome!!!
