The Return of the 90s | My Childhood is Back!

Whether you’re aware of it or not, the 90s are back. In the past few years, the pop culture, fashion, and other aspects of the decade have slowly crept back into the mainstream. Every day, I find something else that reminds me of the trends from my childhood, and it always makes me think: am I really that old?

Of course, trends from the past always come back around at some point, but it seems surreal that I’ve lived long enough to see this resurgence once again. That doesn’t mean that I’m any less excited for certain trends and pop culture aspects to return. It makes me feel like a kid again in a way. Let’s take a look to see how the 90s have fully returned.

Movies and Television

I recently watched the second official trailer for the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie, which is slated to release this March. I was beyond excited as I watched this trailer, because the Power Rangers were a significant part of my childhood. As much as I love how campy and uber 90s the original show is, I appreciate how they’ve significantly updated the story, characters, costumes, and technology. Watching this trailer definitely gave me the warm fuzzies, and I will be first in line to see this film. Speaking of warm fuzzies, the announcement of Sailor Moon R‘s return to theaters definitely got my nostalgia wheel working, so I’m hoping I can catch that before it’s gone.

Additionally, though I think it’s been rarely discussed, but the live-action version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is a throwback to the original animated film, which was released in 1991.

For television, SO MUCH of our beloved 90s shows have made a comeback in a strong way. The X-Files, Full House, The Powerpuff Girls, The Magic School Bus (YES, THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS), and Twin Peaks are either coming back or have returned already. Even The Splat is back on the air on TeenNick. Excuse me, what year is it again?

One of the biggest examples of the return of the 90s comes in the form of toys and gadgets. Most notably is, of course, Furbies and Pokemon Go (side note: somewhere, I still have my original Furbie). Hatchimals is another example of, more so for the demand, which is reminiscent of the infamous Tickle Me Elmo craze of the mid-90s. And, of course, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came back strong, and have been popular once again for the past year or so. I remember my cousin being a huge fan of TMNT when we were kids, and seeing them all over again takes me back.

Can I just say that it’s totally bizarre for me to walk into a store and have nearly every garment look like something from Clarissa’s closet? I resisted the return of 90s fashion trends when those tattoo chokers became popular again. Then, the super chunky heels and flip flops returned, and I thought that there was no justice in the world. Then there’s…this:

But now, more of the “good” trends from the 90s are coming back. I even bought a velvet choker the other day for $1. I’m able to wear my plaid shirts and hoodies tied to my waist once again. And baggy, oversized t-shirts are hip and happening.

Even makeup trends have turned to the dark side–quite literally. Last year, burgundy, plums, and deep brown lip colors  were incredibly popular. Even Urban Decay has brought back classic shades from the decade through eyeshadows, nail polishes, and lipstick colors. And, not too long ago, Bath & Body Works resurrected those classic scents like Cucumber Melon, Country Apple, and Juniper Breeze.

Even the collectible game is strong with 90s nostalgia. Nikelodeon released its own subscription box, which is chock-full of classic Nick memorabilia. Even Funko has decided to kick up the 90s feels to 11 with some of their latest collectibles, including Nickelodeon Pop! Vinyl figurines, and a mash-up  between Funko and Playmobil.

I am most excited about these Playmobil figurines; Playmobil was my JAM back in the day, and I constantly played with them for a long portion of my childhood.

What other 90s trends and influences have you seen? Are you excited or disgusted by this resurgence? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I can’t stand furbies, they freak me out. I watched the Power Rangers trailer and I wasn’t expecting much, but that looks kinda cool.
