Casual Cosplay of the Day | February

Welcome to a new month of Casual Cosplay, Nerds! This month, we’re taking a trip to the Upside Down with our Stranger Things outfits.

If you’re unfamiliar with casual cosplaying, or Casual Cosplay of the Day, you can check out the full details here! Last month, we were transported to 221B Baker Street with our Sherlock-inspired ensembles, but now it’s time to get even…stranger.

Stranger Things is one of my favorite TV shows, and became wildly popular after the first season dropped last summer on Netflix. How could I not create an outfit in honor of this incredible series? Especially now that the Season 2 trailer dropped during the Super Bowl, I think that casually cosplaying this series is absolutely necessary.

With that in mind, and without further ado, here’s my interpretation of a Stranger Things #CCOD!

A lot of my outfit inspiration came from what the kids wore, which is usually a combination of a geeky t-shirt and a plaid button-up. It’s also similar to was Joyce Byers wears in many of the scenes when she’s in the house trying to contact Will. So, for this look, I thought in layers.

I tried to pick an outfit that I would wear if I were out hunting for Demogorgons, so I also considered warmth and comfort. And, to honor the kids’ love of classic sci-fi, and to pay homage to Eleven, I decided to sport this new tee I grabbed from Local Boogeyman*. It reads: From Outer Space.

SHE’S OUR FRIEND, AND SHE’S CRAZY!

I also wore super comfy boots, and mom jeans in honor of Barb.

For makeup, I went for a light, natural look: minimal eyeliner, light contouring, and a hint of pink lip gloss. Pretty.

And, of course, I had to have a bit of fun in my Stranger Things ensemble. Hence these images shot in the dark, which I took in my bathroom.

When piecing together your own outfit, think retro. Stranger Things takes place in 1982, and in late fall in the Midwest, so certain pieces won’t go with the theme. Luckily, because many trends never go out of style–t-shirts, plaid, denim–you don’t have to worry about rummaging through a thrift store. Another point to consider is the color palette of your outfit. Perhaps the brightest colors are worn by Nancy and Eleven, and those are pastels (big in the 80s). Otherwise, muted tones like khaki tan, olive green, burgundy, navy, grey, black, and brown are prevalent in the wardrobe of the show. Also, considering how nerdy Lucas, Mike, Dustin, and Will are, you can totally rock the nerd shirt, digital watch, patches, and pins. I’m sure they would be proud. Finally, if anyone wants to rock the big 80s hair, I would be down for seeing that!

Now it’s your turn! Show me you Casual Cosplays for February! You can post these any time to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Just make sure to tag me and use #nerdilyccod and #ccod. I’m always scanning these tags to see your creations. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get nerdy!

Life was meant to be lived nerdily, so what are you waiting for?
