Ahh, summertime. When I think of summer, I think of hot weather, avoiding Zika, and spending time with my friends. Okay, maybe I’m being a little cynical. I actually enjoy summer, and there are many events that happen during this season that I look forward to all year. One such event is the Bristol Renaissance Faire. Even if you’re not nerdy, or you’re not a history buff, Ren Faires provide endless entertainment for everyone. If you’ve never been to one, you’re seriously missing out on something spectacular. But, at the same time, Renaissance Faires are different beasts from conventions. Have no fear, gentle person, for I am here to ease any worries you might have! If you’re gearing up to attend your local Faire, keep these tips in mind:
Find a way to buy your ticket on the cheap
The Bristol Ren Faire provides many opportunities to buy their tickets at discounted prices. I actually bought mine at C2E2 this year for $16; they’re normally $25-$26. Whether it’s a Groupon, a coupon code, or buying your ticket at a different location, there’s always a way to find a better price on a ticket.
Dress Appropriately for the Weather
Ren Faires are outdoor activities, usually occurring in the spring and summer. When the temperature rises, make sure you dress accordingly. Even if you’ve decided to dress the part, make sure you are comfortable in what you’re wearing, and you have a way of “airing out” if you start to feel overheated. If you do start to feel uneasy–no matter what you’re wearing–you should find a shady spot, grab some water, and get some air circulating.
Grog and me and are dandy and all, but it’s the 21st Century: water is okay now. Plus, you’ll be walking and sweating, and you need to replenish yourself.
Be Smart With Your Money
There are tons of stands selling similar goods at Ren Faires, and a lot of them overcharge. Be prepared with enough cash to get yourself some food, souvenirs, drinks, and other fun things, but don’t be frivolous. Also, if you run out of cash, there may not be an ATM for you to visit.
There are people from all walks of life at Ren Faires. It goes without saying that the Golden Rule applies to all situations in life; in particular, the Ren Faire is a good example of exercising the Golden Rule. All in all, just be respectful.
More than likely, you’ll encounter employees who are portraying a character. They may interact with you as their character, so why be a Grumpy Gills? Enjoy their character and the effort they’re putting into their role. Have fun! Besides, it’s not every day that you get to interact with the Queen of England.
Take Advantage of the Ongoing Events
There are lots of entertaining shows, activities, and displays that are going on during a Ren Faire (my personal favorite is the jousting event). If you’re going to make the day out of it, then take advantage of all the fun things that are happening.
Check the Faire Schedule
The cool thing about the Bristol Faire is that each weekend has a different theme. There’s a Pirate Weekend, a Fantasy Weekend, a Steampunk Weekend, and many more. There are also special events occurring during these weekends. When you’re planning your trip to the local Faire, check their website to see what’s going on. You might be pleasantly surprised to see what fun is in store for you.
Make the Most of Your Time There
It’s a pretty obvious tip, but it still needs to be said. If this is your first time or your fiftieth time attending a Ren Faire, make the most of your stay. Also, keep an open mind. You’d be surprised at how much you enjoyed the Faire if you don’t say “No.” Think of the old improv guideline: “Yes, and…”
