Current Comic I Love: Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat!

I was first introduced to Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! through an Instagram post by a fellow blogger. Completely ignoring that age-old advice, I judged this comic book by its cover, and fell in love. When I finally picked up Issue #1, I was hooked. The story is hilarious and engaging, the art is cute, and the abundance of cats exceeds all my expectations. Let me explain why:

The premise of Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! revolves around Patsy’s new life as an entrepreneur. After being fired from Jennifer Walters’s (She-Hulk) law firm, Patsy decides she is going to start a staffing agency to help the unemployed, Inhuman masses. She moves into an apartment with the telekinetic Ian, reconnects with childhood friend, Tom, and begins to find her place in the part-time working world. But—there always has to be a “but”—Patsy is plagued by an old nemesis from her adolescence, who is republishing a comic series based on Patsy’s life. On top of that, Hellcat isn’t having an easy time, either. Someone is recruiting Inhumans for nefarious deeds! The overall conundrum that pervades this comic series is whether or not both Patsy and Hellcat can keep it together with so much going on.

There’ so much to fawn over about this series. First, it’s humor: the series cracks jokes about everyday life as an off-duty superhero. There are often remarks made about working a crappy part-time job—always appreciated—and struggling to pay the bills. Preach! Then there’s the art style: colored in lively pastels, the comics just pop when you walk past them at your local shop. Everything about this series seems so down-to-earth, and it’s incredible.

I also love Patsy as a character. As hard as it may seem to relate to a superhero, Patsy Walker is just an everyday person like you and me. Despite the fact that I have the athleticism of Winston Churchill, I still find this heroine relatable. Patsy has problems with finding an apartment, a job, and starting her own company. She also has to constantly balance her professional and personal relationships with her friends. And might I say, she has some pretty awesome friends.

Her friendship with She-Hulk is one that I dreamed of always having some day as an adult. I love the idea of the two of them hanging out, shopping, and getting drinks. They balance each other out well. Then there’s Hellcat’s black book of badass babes she can call up at any time, like Valkyrie, Miss America, and Squirel Girl. Plus, you can’t discredit Ian and Tom, who are super sarcastic and lovable. She’s pretty much set in the friendship department, as far as I’m concerned.

However, I’d have to say that the reason why I love this series so much is its light-heartedness. It’s simply a cute story to read. There are some heavy themes out there in the comic book world, but Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! is a bright spot among the darkness. I love a brooding superhero, but sometimes I need a break from that. And I’ve definitely found the answer.

If you’re on the market for an new read, then I highly recommend Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of it. Also, cats; enough said.
