Let’s Talk about that Wonder Woman Teaser Trailer

Earlier this week, while people were peeing themselves over the Suicide Squad trailer, I was peeing myself over the Wonder Woman teaser footage. Please note: I did NOT actually pee myself. Just making sure we’re clear here.

If you haven’t seen it yet, then prepare to pee your pants, too:

Doesn’t that look awesome??

Okay, let’s break this down.

Though many details about the film are still quite fuzzy, there are a few known facts about it: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, and Connie Nielsen will be starring in it, the film will be directed by Patty Jenkins (director of Monster), and it’s apparently a period film (set in the 1910s).

There are other details that we can guess, like the purpose of the film and the story it might tell. As per superhero movies, the first installment is usually an origin film.  We’ve seen this with Man of SteelCaptain America: The First AvengerBatman Begins (for our current image of Batman), Thor, and Iron Man. We will also continue to see this trend in the upcoming years, as DC Comics gears up to launch a Justice League film. Marvel, too, since we now know the release dates of the Black Panther and Captain Marvel movies. Needles to say, it’s safe to assume that we will learn the origins of Wonder Woman, and we will meet Steve Trevor.

Another point of discussion we can bring up is the time frame of the Wonder Woman film. I’ve seen speculation around the web that the time frame looks to be during World War I; in the teaser footage, this theory is slightly corroborated by images of German-esque WWI uniforms, and horse-drawn carriages. It’s safe to assume, then, that Diana might fight alongside Allied forces. This could be her purpose to leave her home of Themyscira.

We also see Wonder Woman in period clothing, as she adjusts her glasses in a mirror. With this piece of evidence, we can also assume that her secret identity might be established. Either that, or she’s going undercover.

While some fans aren’t too thrilled with the casting choice for Diana, I still think that the movie looks fantastic. Many of us have been waiting for a female film addition to this cinematic cannon, and Wonder Woman will be the first stand-alone film that predominantly features a heroine–in recent years, anyway. This movie marks a monumental shift; no longer will comic book adaptations be man’s world. Not only that, but this (hopefully) new wave will kick off with a bang by showcasing Wonder Woman.

Though I am not an active fan of the warrior princess, I respect what she stands for. She is strong, powerful, smart, resourceful, and kind. Having a female figure of this statute up on the big screen can influence a whole new generation of fans. So, I’m happy that they are adding another great lady to the comic cinematic universe, and finally giving one of them their own flick.

  1. Lovely read! One correction: early on, you said that Chris Evans is in this movie. I think you meant Chris Pine
