‘Tis the season to be tacky. Fa la la la la, la la la la.
In recent years, the popularity of ugly Christmas sweaters has grown tremendously. More that 90%* of co-workers bring out these hideous garments to help celebrate the festivities of the season.
But with Christmas less than a week away, most of the decent ugly sweaters have already been nabbed. And, let’s face it, you’re sick of the usual holiday sweater motifs. Snowmen and reindeer are so old-fashioned.
Why not create your own tawdry masterpiece?
This helpful guide will not only give you all the tips and tricks on how to decorate a sweater, but will provide you with plenty of creative freedom to make your garment unique to you. Hooray for individuality!
Nerds, it’s time to take chances, make mistakes, and GET FUGLY!
From you utility belt, you’ll need:
- Glue gun
- Glue sticks**
- Fabric paint
- Felt and/or felt shapes
- Sewing needle
- Sewing pins
- Pipe cleaners
Please note that, depending on the theme you choose for your sweater, you can add or subtract items from this supplies list. This is a general list of items you can use for your sweater.
Step 1: Choose an Overall Theme for you Sweater
Having a theme for your sweater will make the decoration process much easier. I decided that mine should be covered with cats, so that was my theme. Go figure.
Your theme can be anything, though. Batman, Sailor Moon, Star Wars. It’s all kosher. Wait, wrong holiday. Well, you can do that, too.
Step 2: Prepare your decorations
Measure, cut, pin, whatever you’e got to do to make the process better.
I had to cut out kitty faces from pieces of felt, so this step took some time to complete. But that’s the great thing about felt: you can make it whatever you want.
Also, if you need to alter any pre-made pieces that you’ve purchased, this is a good time to get them ready.
Step 3: Add embellishments
Your decorations can be pretty much anything, as long as you have a strong enough glue, that is. But, please refrain from attaching a full-sized wreath onto your chest. Here’s why: it will be so uncomfortable if you do. Please, decorate responsibly.
Here are some easily acquired accessories you may add to your sweater:
Felt Shapes–these are easy to attach, either by hand-sewing them or gluing them onto the sweater.
Yarn–manipulate it any way you want, and you can spell out words, add borders, or create patterns onto your sweater.
Fabric Paint–don’t want to cut anything out? Paint it on!
Ribbon–adds a little something extra, you know? Also, you can find ribbon with Christmastime patterns, shapes, and colors.
Step 4: Stick it
Stick all that shit onto your sweater. Create patterns, funny details, and spell out holiday messages even. Here are my top tools for the job:
Glue gun–where would you be without your trusty glue gun? Fire this bad boy up every chance you get.
Surebonder brand glue sticks**–to go with your glue gun, you know. I recently discovered a fabric version of hot glue sticks. I bought it for $3.99 (yeah, I know), and tried it out on my own sweater. The packaging claims it to be fexible and machine washable, so we’ll see! But using it was just as easy as the normal craft glue sticks.
Step 5: Allow for dry time
Make sure you let all paint and glue dry with adequate time before you don your ugly apparel.
Show off your handy work at your office holiday party, an ugly sweater affair, or at your next family gathering Show that shit off, you’ve made a hideous masterpiece!
